SolarSTART

About This Project

The SolarSTART project of 2010 was a concept design with several objectives.

The prime objective was to make a solar passive house possible for an individual or couple to build themselves, starting from a simple ‘kernel’ unit. The overall objective was to popularise solar passive design by making it affordable.

The solarSTART project starts small, with a ‘kernel’ structure suitable for two people, but which can be extended bedroom by bedroom until a four or five bedroom solar passive house is achieved. This was to allow the original owners to extend over time to meet their needs. Or not to extend – it was up to them!

The house exists in a circle, is built around that circle.

Each extension was to be predesigned to fit to the existing structure. Moreover, it could be self-built and it’s details will be known, Planning permission not problematic, and its build cost would be known too.

The concept starts with..

A two-bedroomed starter kernel unit. The bedrooms are on a mezzanine level overlooking the Lounge/Dining areas. This unit was to be the basis of a larger future home but initially it gave adequate space for two people.

It continues, bedroom by bedroom, to eventually..

solarSTART4: A four bedroomed unit. This unit has been extended from a solarStart to include two further bedrooms at ground floor level. A solarSTART3 unit is also possible by just adding one additional bedroom.

In all extended versions the former Shower/WC to the rear of the Kitchen is converted to a Utility room with the sanitaryware moved to a new Shower/WC pod adjoining the main entrance.

The plans shown here also include a live/work unit or Studio.
