About This Project

A newbuild Garage, Guest accommodation and Studio in the grounds of a Listed building in Oxfordshire, UK

The architectural ‘language’ is Cotswold vernacular – with local stone used for the walls and stone tiles for the roof.

However, this building is highly insulated, has underfloor heating pipework throughout, and is heated with a 6Kw ground-source heat pump.

The foundations needed to be piled, as the structural engineer confirmed that the building stood on morainic gravels, which could be highly mobile when wet. So the piles extended approximately 9 metres down to a layer of Oxford clay.

An unusual aspect of this project is the two-storey height bay window on the West gable, with a galleried/cut back floor behind it. This element repeats a similar bay on the Listed cottage adjoining, and gives extended views out across fields towards the Isis river. There were no difficulties of any kind with Planning Permission.

The roof insulation incorporated a material called Tri-Iso 10, which is a multifoil quilt. This had to be installed on a layer of counterbattens as this type of insulation requires an airgap on both sides. However, it has the strange property of helping to keep heat in whilst also reflecting back solar radiation to help keep the building cool in summer.

As can be seen in some images, internal partitions within the Studio were achieved with sails, which gave the client (a sailor) enjoyment in the association and in the adjustment. These were a light-touch method of dividing space, which didn’t engage with the feature roof in a heavy or destructive manner.
