Crosshill Extension, 2016

Glasgow

About This Project

A small extension to an apartment within a large sandstone villa in an area of south Glasgow, Scotland, UK.

This extension was a departure for Solarity in having a nominally flat roof of glassfibre. The reason for this was that a pitched roof extension for this project would have involved creating some rather vulnerable (to leakage) valley guttering, and run the risk of obscuring the view and light to the apartment at first floor level. The latter of which would have brought Planning problems. The Planners had in any case indicated their preference for a contemporary-style extension in order to contrast rather than try to blend in with the sandstone villa.

The extension provides a Lounge and dining area, liberating the former Lounge to be an additional bedroom.

The foundations of this extension had to be rafted, in order to mitigate possible soil/foundation instability caused by unmapped coal seam mining in the vicinity in the 16/17th centuries.

This extension had a number of unique details, including massive polystyrene blocks under the new floor and single leaf block-on-its-side masonry construction, with insulation and untreated Douglas Fir boarding outside of it.

Another unique feature was the ‘waterlight’ – a rooflight designed to have a layer of water on top of it, to give a unique quality of moving light inside.
